2009Co-opRetreatBuzzardSwampPA

General Information

The 2009 Co-op retreat will be from Friday, May 1 to Sunday, May 3, 2009.

For a list of people who are attending, go to Minutes.042709 minutes.

Directions

The directions, straight from Google, to Marienville, PA (which is 5 minutes from Buzzard Swamp) are available at:
Direction from the Co-op to Buzzard Swamp

Once you are in Marienville, here are the final directions to the Buzzard Swamp parking lot:

  1. You will pass a few hotels on your left on the way into Marienville. About .5 miles down the road, you will begin to see a few bars and small stores on either side. Immediately after these is a 6 way intersection. You wish to turn RIGHT onto state road 3002- it the road most to your right that will have you almost complete a 180 degree turn.
  2. State road 3002 will take you past ~.75 miles of houses, and then we drop down into some woods. Follow the road into the woods, past a water treatment plant on your left, and after ~.75 miles take your first LEFT onto Buzzard Swamp Road (the road is not labeled, but there is a sign for it).
  3. Follow this gravel road for a little more than 2 miles to the end. Park in the large parking lot there. Deploy. The trail continues on where the road was headed behind the car barrier.

The Campsite

The entirety of the Buzzard Swamp park:

A treasure map. The treasure is the Co-op retreat! Awwwwww.

The campsite map is a little ambiguous. When leaving the cars follow the gravel road past the barrier. Do not take the trail we took last year. The trail at the top of the image above (near the white arrow to last year's campsite) does not exist, as far as I am concerned.

Last year we camped in the Northern part of the park. Each day we hiked down into the main meadows area seen in the image above. We frolicked in the grass and played in the various ponds. There were not that many people at the swamp and the sunshine made for a beautiful weekend.

Last year we had ~15 minute hike to the Northern campsite. This year will be a little bit longer, ~30 minute hike. An early group is going to bring the heavy gear and wine to the campsite and try and have a fire going and all the tents set up for the later groups.
